The best way to keep your home tidy is with a robot vacuum. It will remove dust, pet hair, and other surface debris before it becomes a larger problem.

Some robots connect to smart assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that can recharge and pick up the area they left.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot mop and vacuum combo is an excellent choice for many households. It can be used to vacuum and mop and has a great navigation system that includes both GPS and laser sensors and comes with a variety of features and controls that are available via the app. It comes with a useful feature that lets you create cleaning zones in areas that require extra attention, and also to create Keep Out zones in areas where you don't want it to be. Like all Roomba devices, it receives new software updates that make it even better over time.

It's expensive however, it's also one of the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has evaluated. It's equipped with a powerful battery that can vacuum a large home in under two hours, and it can switch between vacuuming and mopping with the press of one button. And, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the trash bin after each run, this one automatically empties into a larger waste container above its charging dock.

It has a wide range of other features that make it a good choice for homes with a lot of space, including intelligent obstacle avoidance, which uses both a camera and processor-powered intelligents to identify obstacles. It is rarely derailed or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects like power cables. It's not as precise in detecting pet waste, or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While the Anker-owned Eufy has made an impact in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model that could also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that comes with a variety of features that are advanced and can compete with much more expensive models.

The main selling point of Eufy's the X8 is its laser navigation. The previous Eufy devices have constructed an outline of your home utilizing infrared sensors and bumping into things, but the X8's laser mapping system is far more precise. It takes less time to create an extensive map of your home and can store multiple maps. This is great for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is a decent vacuum cleaner on bare floors. It is able to easily throw debris through the side brushes and into its 400ml dustbin. Its tyres are adept at hugging corners and edges, even though they're circular. It's not a great kitty litter picker, though as our tests show it can only remove about 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. This is ideal for spills that aren't serious, but you can't regulate the amount of water that it uses. It does, however, do an excellent job of picking up pet hair, with a better pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, effective appliances. It has a beautiful design, superb navigation and an impressive cleaning power. However, it does have some operational hiccups that keep it from ranking as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

Similar to the latest models of iRobot like the RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping system that uses an LIDAR sensor to map out a room and two 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. Once mapped, the app lets you designate virtual no-go zones and areas that you want to clean. will clean automatically. You can also alter the cleaning options, begin a manual clean or see live feeds from the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 has excellent sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions in a flash. And its sweeping and suction power are top-of-the-line and cleans up surface debris from carpets with medium piles and dust on floors that are unfinished. However, it's not the most agile robot on the market. It's not the best climber and has issues with transition strips made of metal.

Some people buy robot vacuums due to the ease of setting up a schedule using an app, and then forgetting about them for weeks. However, it's essential that a machine can accomplish the task that's the reason why our ZDNet staff looked over and tested a number of the most popular models to help you select the right one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac that looks just like the other, but comes with several more features and better performance. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home, and uses them to navigate around obstacles and avoid them. It is able to detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. The combination of sensors with a bump detector and an infrared sensor that keeps the vacuum from stepping on the stairs makes it one of our most agile vacuums.

In our tests, it easily could climb over the thick shag rug and didn't end up stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation skills were impressive. Its composite score for flooring and carpet beats the competition and it was able to pick up 98.5% of pet hair that we tested in our lab samples.

Its controls are a bit more basic than those of competitors. There's an uniform cleaning button on the top and you can launch it via the app, or by voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set a schedule for weekly or daily cleans, create no-go zones, and view its cleaning history. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and is attractive in your home. The rear dust bin is easy to empty and removing the filter is the same.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is a good option if you're looking for a vacuum cleaner that is easy to use and has no frills at a reasonable price. This model lacks some smart features like Alexa integration and digital mapping, which are available in higher-end models. However, if you do not need these functions, you can save money.

This robot is very easy to setup and use. It does not require a smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does come with the remote control that lets you choose between different modes and alter the suction level. It also allows you to manually take the robovac off during scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, the 11S was very effective at cleaning dirt and pet hair from hard floors and low-pile carpets. Its slim profile made it possible to get under low-hanging furniture and other objects that larger robots are unable to reach. It was able to pass easily over thresholds of doors and switch from one floor type to another.

The 11S, like other robots will also suckup some items, including cords and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you prevent this from happening by keeping these items off the ground and using a cord organizer if possible. It also recommends cleaning the dustbin periodically by replacing the filters and washing or changing the brushes as required.

6. IRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's most popular robot vacuum. It's costly, but it's top-performing and arguably the most advanced robot vacuum you can buy. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is something to behold. It also has more advanced automation features than most competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary markers using its mobile app. It's a dependable robot vacuum, even if its app isn't the most responsive and the 980's wheels spin out when it comes across cables.

We really like the 980 due to its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM), to memorise the floor plan of your home. It will then use robots that vacuum and mop the information to create an efficient and consistent cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum cleaner than the majority of high-end robots.

The 980's other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes which pick up dirt from hard floors and carpet and the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. The sensors for floor tracking help it navigate between furniture and around edges, and Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from falling down stairs. It also automatically returns to the base station for simple recharges between sessions. Although the 980's battery life and bin size aren't as impressive as other robot vacuums, it's a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors spotless for hours and hours.
